Our number one most common phone call comes from homeowners experiencing a leaking roof. Majority of the time, these leaks are the result of a damaged or tampered plumbing boot. Any time you see a pipe exiting the roof for ventilation purposes, it will have some type of boot to shed the water and prevent it from running down the walls of the pipe and into your attic space. The two most common type of pipe boots are lead, and rubber. While lead does last longer than the rubber counterpart, we have seen countless instances where squirrels chew through the lead and create holes. In these situations, we have to replace the entire lead boot, as the lead boot itself cannot be repaired. With the rubber boot, weather and human error often cause issues. Weather will crack and deteriorate the boot causing it to slowly leak into the home. People sometimes push down, or pull on the pipe causing it to fold inward and allow water to enter the home. Luckily, there are easy fixes to these problems. As long as the boot is not damaged too badly, a collar can be installed that covers the damaged rubber. If the damage is too large for the collar to cover, then replacing the entire boot is required. Regardless of the issue, Barringer Brothers can definitely help!
