We often get phone calls for possible storm damage. Wind damage is a common problem on older roofs or roofs that have incorrectly been installed. The most obvious sign of wind damage is shingles that have been completely removed from the roof. The wind has completely ripped the sealed shingle away from the surrounding shingles and removed it from the nails and decking. In these cases, the wind has exceeded the wind rating of the shingles or incorrect installation caused problems. Other signs of wind damage is uplift. This is where the shingles are no longer sealed to the surrounding shingles but are still attached with the nail line. Ways to find this is to physically lift on the shingles and see if they are no longer sealed down. Another way to assess for this is to see the shingles lifting up on a windy day, flapping in the wind. Creased shingles are a great way to see if wind damage is present. In these cases, shingles will have a broken seal and will have been folded over the shingle above. The shingles literally fold like a piece of paper which leaves a crease line in the shingle. Wind damage coverage is dependent upon individual insurance companies, however, can be assessed universally.
