1. Are you installing over the existing siding, or doing a full removal?
This one matters more than it might seem. Installing new siding over existing siding (called “over-cladding” or “residing over”) is faster and cheaper — but it can hide moisture damage that’s already happening behind the current material. It also adds thickness that can affect window and door trim, and it doesn’t give anyone a chance to inspect or repair the sheathing underneath.
A contractor who recommends full removal isn’t just trying to charge you more. They’re giving your home’s exterior a clean start and eliminating the risk of trapping existing problems underneath new material.
2. What brand and product line are you installing, and what’s the warranty?
Not all vinyl siding is the same. There’s a significant quality range between builder-grade vinyl and premium residential product lines — in thickness, in UV stability, in how well the color holds over 10–15 years, and in what the manufacturer’s warranty actually covers.
Ask for the specific product name and look it up. Ask whether the warranty is a manufacturer warranty on the material, a labor warranty from the contractor, or both. A contractor who can’t answer this question clearly is either not paying attention to what they’re installing or doesn’t want you to know.
3. How do you handle the areas around windows, doors, and corners?
The siding panels themselves are the easy part. The details — J-channel around windows, corner posts, trim around doors, transitions at different materials — are where installation quality shows up, both visually and functionally. Poor detailing at windows and corners is one of the most common entry points for water infiltration behind siding.
Ask your contractor to walk you through specifically how they handle these areas. A crew with real experience can answer this without hesitating. One that’s cutting corners will give you a vague answer.
4. What does your cleanup and site protection process look like?
Siding jobs are messy. Old material comes off in large pieces, fasteners end up in the grass, and crews are working around your windows, landscaping, and foundation. How a contractor handles the job site during and after the work is a real indicator of how much they care about your property — not just the finished product.
Ask specifically: Do they use ground tarps to catch debris? How do they handle nails and fasteners near landscaping? What does end-of-day cleanup look like versus final cleanup? A crew that takes site protection seriously is usually a crew that takes the installation seriously too.
5. Can you show me examples of siding jobs you’ve completed in this area?
Any established siding contractor working in Troy or Madison County should be able to point you to completed jobs nearby — either photos, references, or both. This isn’t just about seeing their workmanship. It’s a basic credibility check. A contractor who’s been doing quality work in your community for years will have no trouble answering this question.
